Rabindranath Tagore was a great Indian poet. He was born on 7 May 1861 in Jor-Sanko, Kolkata. His parents were named Sharda Devi (mother) and Maharishi Devendranath Tagore (father). Tagore took his education at home under the tutelage of private teachers of various disciplines. He started writing poetry at a very young age. He still remains a famous poet because he has written thousands of poems, short stories, songs, essays, plays etc. Tagore and his work are famous all over the world. He became the first Indian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his great writing called “Gitanjali”. He was also a philosopher, a painter and a great patriot who composed the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” of our country.

He was born in a rich and cultured family in Jor-Sanko, Calcutta on 7 May in 1861 at the home of Maharishi Devendranath Tagore (father) and Sharda Devi (mother). In 1875, when Tagore was 14, his mother died. In his early age he developed an interest in writing poetry. He was also a painter, philosopher, patriot, educationist, novelist, singer, essay writer, story writer and creative activist.

His great writings in the form of novels and short stories point to his intelligence, deep experience and understanding of human character. He was a poet who has given a very sweet national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” to the country. Some of his important works are: “Geetanjali, Aamar Sonar Bangla, Gher-ber, Rabindra Sangeet” etc. In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for writing his great English version of “Gitanjali”.

He was the first Indian and the first Asian to receive this honor. He was the founder of Vishwabharati University in Santiniketan in 1902. In 1919, in a protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he returned an award given by the British government “Nightwood” because of his unending love towards his country and countrymen. His great writings still inspire the people of the country.

Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta, India to Devendranath Tagore and Sharda Devi. He was born into a rich and cultured Brahmin family. He received his early education through private teachers at his home and never went to school, although he went to England for higher education. Tagore started writing poetry from the age of 8. His poems were published under Pseudonym Bhanusinho when he was only 16 years old. He went to England in 1878 to study law, however returned to India without completing his studies as he had to move on as a poet and writer.

During a long sea voyage from England he translated his work Gitanjali into English. The year Gitanjali was published, she was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature at the same time of the year. He showed the mysticism and emotional beauty of Indian culture in his writings, for which for the first time any non-Western person was awarded this prestigious honor.

Along with being a famous poet, he was a talented writer, novelist, musician, drama writer, painter and philosopher. He was well aware of how to control language while writing poetry and story. He was a good philosopher through whom he influenced a large number of Indian people during the freedom struggle.

His contribution to Indian literature is huge and unforgettable. Two songs became very famous in his Rabindrasangeet as he is the national anthem of two countries “Jan Man Gana” (National Anthem of India) and “Aamar Sonar Bangla” (National Anthem of Bangladesh). His creative writing, whether in the form of poetry or story, cannot challenge him even today. Perhaps he was the first to reduce the distance between east and west with his effective writings.

Another of his works was ‘Poorvi’ in which he has featured evening and morning songs under a wide range of subjects such as social, moral, cultural, religious, political etc. Manasi was written by him in 1890 in which he collected some social and poetic poems. Most of his writings were based on the lives of Bengali people. Another of his works was ‘Galpagucha’, a collection of stories based on the poverty, backwardness and illiteracy of the Indian people.

She has other poetry collections such as Sonar Tari, Kalpana, Chitra, Naivedya etc. and novels like Gora, Chitrangada and Malini, Binodini and Nauka Dubai, Raja and Rani etc. He was a very religious and spiritual man who helped others a lot in difficult times. He was a great educationist and so he established a unique university named Shantiniken, the abode of peace. Rabindranath Tagore left the world on 7 August 1941 without seeing India’s independence.
