Holi is celebrated every year in the month of March ( Phalgun ). Holi is a major festival of Hindu religion. But not only Hindus all people of different religions and culture celebrates it. On Holi, people meet and hug and celebrate the festival of Holi by splashing colors to each other. Religious songs are also sung during this time. On this day, we eat specially made gujiya, papad, halwa, etc. Holika Dahan is done a day before Holi .

There is an ancient history behind celebrating Holi festival. In ancient times there used to be an evil person named Hiranyakashyap. He had an evil sister named Holika . Hiranyakashyap considered himself a god. He had a son named Prahlada who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap was opposed to Lord Vishnu. When he stopped Prahlada from worship vishnu and when Prahlada refused his words, Hiranyakashyap tried to kill his own son. In this Hiranyakashyap asked help from his sister Holika. Since Holika had got the power of not burning in the fir.To help her brother, Holika said yes. After that Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad but the irony is that holika burned in fire while prahlad was not at all hurt coz of lord vishnus’ power.
