Swami Vivekananda is counted among the great men of India. At a time when India was finding itself inferior in English slavery, Bharat Mata gave birth to a boy that brought glory to not only the people of India but to the whole of humanity. He made the people of the world appreciate the spirituality of India. The entire India is proud of this great man.

This great man was born on 12 January 1863 in a Kshatriya family of Kolkata Shri Vishwanath Dutt. Vishwanath Dutt was a renowned lawyer of the Calcutta High Court. The parents named the boy Narendra. Narendra was brilliant since childhood. He passed the matriculation examination in 1889 and took admission in a college called ‘General Assembly’ in Kolkata. Here he studied subjects like history, philosophy, literature etc. Narendra passed his B.A. examination with first class degree.

Narendra used to view divine authority and religion with suspicion, but he was curious. He went to Brahmasamaj to get knowledge about religion but he was not at all satisfied with what they are teaching there. Then Narendra came in contact with Saint Ramakrishna Paramahamsa of Dakshineswar at the age of seventeen. Paramhansa ji had a profound influence on Narendra. Narendra made him his guru.

During these days Narendra’s father died. Narendra has the responsibility of family. But due to lack of good job, he faced financial difficulties. Narendra went to Guru Ramakrishna’s home. The Guru asked him to pray goddess Maa Kali to end the financial crisis. Instead for praying for money he prayed for knowledge and wisdom.One day the Guru renamed him from Narendra to Vivekananda.

After the death of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Vivekananda left Kolkata and started living in the ashram of Varadnagar. Here he studied the holybook sashtras and religious book. After this, he set out on a trip to India. They reached South India via Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Junagadh, Somnath, Porbandar, Baroda, Poona, Mysore. From there they reached Pondicherry and Madras.

In 1893, the World Conference was being held in the city of Chicago, USA. The disciples urged Swami Vivekananda to take part in the Hindu religion. Swami reached Chicago after facing difficulties. He was finally called to speak. But the listener was thrilled as soon as he heard his speech. He was lectured several times. His name became famous in the world. After this he traveled to America and European countries. Many people in America became his disciples.

Vivekananda returned to India after preaching abroad in four years. His fame had already reached India. He was greeted with a grand welcome. Swamiji told the people – “The worship of the real Shiva is just like the worship of the poor, in the service of the patient and the weak. He founded the Ramakrishna Mission to propagate and spread Indian spiritualism. He worked hard continuously for the success of the mission, which affected his health badly. On July 4, 1902, at nine o’clock in the night, at the young age of 39, he took his last breath with the sound of the sound of ॐ. But his message of ‘struggle untill India becomes prosperous‘ – will continue to guide us.
