Nalanda University is located in Nalanda, Rajgir, Bihar. It is a central university. In 2006, the then President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, proposed the idea while addressing a joint session of Bihar Legislature to revive Nalanda University. Thus the Nalanda University Bill was passed from the Rajya Sabha on 21 August 2010 and the Lok Sabha on 26 August 2010. The bill received the assent of the President on 31 September 2010. The university came into existence on 25 November 2010 when the bill came into force. The university started its first academic session on 1 September 2014.
