Why is women empowerment necessary?
About 50% of the population in India is women, so we can say that women represent almost half of the population of the society. Therefore, their contribution in the development of the country is integral.
According to the International Monetary Fund, India’s growth rate can increase to 27 percent, if women in India are provided with enough opportunities, and given equal importance as given to men.
The need for Women Empowerment in India arose because there was gender inequality in India since ancient times. And from the very beginning India is a male dominated country. Even in 20th century, women are facing grave issue like Sati pratha, dowry system, sexual violence, child labor, child marriage etc.
Status of Women Empowerment in India
In India, government is focusing on Schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, Women Helpline Scheme, Ujjwala Yojana, Sukanya Samrdhi Yojna, Mahila Sakti Kendra Yojna, pradhan mantri koshal vikas yojna Mahila Shakti Kendra to empower Indian women.
We need to understand that through gender equality economic development can be achieved in the country. In order to really bring women empowerment in the Indian society, one has to understand and remove the main causes of bad practices against women discussed above.
